They have their own bathroom (equally small) and daily housekeeping service, which is one of the best perks. Crew members need to live on the ship for months at a time, which means they need to be able to eat, stay fit, and have time for leisure. That’s why you’ll find a variety of crew facilities below deck to help them enjoy their life onboard as cruise staff. We actually spoke to a number of individuals who have lived on cruise ships as part of their jobs and let’s just say, things are INTERESTING. There are a whole bunch of secrets, exciting things, and not-so-great parts that you probably never knew about when it comes to life on a cruise ship.

All I knew was that I was going to spend seven months at sea, with people I didn’t know and doing a job that I didn’t know much about. The majority of crew areas are located on decks zero, 1, 2, or 3, however, this varies by ship size and layout. Although often traveling alone, the captain’s quarters will be large enough for when they do have family or guests staying onboard with them. You can borrow the cleaning products from the Housekeeping department or Laundry, but I always preferred to have my own products that I would buy in a crew shop (yes, we do have one!) or outside in the port. Most of the crew members have double-shared cabins, meaning that they need to share a cabin with someone else.

On the larger cruise ships, most employees share cabins on one of the crew decks, and some people, especially the cruise staff, actually have living quarters in the plush passenger areas. Although some employees get single cabins, these are usually reserved for cruise staff with more seniority. Employees are usually separated by department, at least on the larger cruise ships. Cruise staff live on the same floor, kitchen and maintenance staff on another, and often the crew is further divided by nationality.

For example, the majority of restaurant and bar staff normally live on deck zero close to the crew elevators that can bring them fast to their workplace (bars, galleys, a dining room, restaurants). Officers and managers who have single cabins are usually situated on decks 1 or 2 on the port side and starboard side, as they have portholes and windows. As mentioned above, cruise ship crew cabins vary by size which is mainly determined by your rank or title onboard.

These cabins are slightly bigger (but not necessarily more luxurious), they have a porthole (window) and a larger, full-size bed.

Crew members have to be physically fit to meet the demands of the job, and staff must be physically presentable as they're in the hospitality industry. They need to blow off steam between shifts, and eat, and drink, and party. Mingling with guests is a no-no, so crew members have separate gyms, hair salons, laundromats, restaurants, bars, clubs, jacuzzis, swimming pools and more. The quality of these differs from ship to ship, and we'll take a look at a range of them here. For crew members who achieve a higher rank or title, a larger room may accompany their status. Sometimes, this may mean a room with a porthole window or even their own room!

Cruise Ship Crew Life – What to Expect

For Kaitlin, one of the things that was the most challenging on her cruise experiences was the quality of the crew food. Well, for Nathan it was the ability to travel, the community of people you meet and become friends with from around the world, and getting the chance to perform all the time (in his entertainment role). If he didn’t get off the ship for his day off, he said that he’d typically work out, connect with family, and sleep. Kaitlin shared a somewhat similar experience, with contracts that lasted 5-6 months. Generally, though, he noted that contracts are 6-8 months in length.

While there's no oven or range, it is equipped with a fridge, dishwasher, microwave, and toaster oven. You might be surprised to find a Captain's room just as nice looking as guest cabins. Typically, Nathan shared that they’d work 4-5 days each week, but that could also vary, with the crew getting more days off during longer sailings (and working more during shorter sailings). You may also be allowed to have dinner at specialty restaurants for an extra fee with discounts applied. They are normally located on decks zero, 1, and 2, whereas Bridge officers have their cabins on higher decks closer to the bridge.
